Before I jump into the recipe for my homemade Onion Soup Mix, did you know a Parmesan Cheese lid will fit onto a regular size canning jar? This is how I store my onion soup mix.
How handy is that? Makes me feel good, too, that even though I can't recycle the lid like I do the canister, I can reuse it so it stays out of the landfill, too.
Back to the recipe. I use this to make dips and to season several beef dishes like Beef 'n Noodles and Roast Beef. If you ask me, I think it tastes identical to the packages you buy in the store.
Onion Soup Mix
1/3 cup powdered beef broth base
3/4 cup dried minced onion
4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp crushed celery seed
1/4 tsp sugar
Mix together and store in an air tight container. 2 tablespoons of the mix equals 1 envelope of the store bought version. This recipe is equivalent to about 10 envelopes.
Here's another way to reuse a canning jar.
A standard salt box lid will fit onto a wide mouth canning jar. It takes a little trimming, but it totally works. I keep my bulk yeast in this jar. The flip top makes it really easy to measure out what I need.
I love finding new ways to use old things. What other ways do you reuse canning jars?
